In the early morning of May 17, the Minnesota Legislature passed the historic Education Omnibus bill, which included unemployment insurance for hourly school employees.
This law corrects an eighty-year-old exclusion for a mostly female workforce of hourly school employees and ensures financial security through the summer months. When workers aren't struggling in the summer to make ends meet, they are able to come back next school year, which provides stability for our students.
Kelly Gibbons, Executive Director of SEIU Local 284, shared our excitement about on the win, "School employees were carved out of unemployment insurance for too long. All workers should have these same benefits. After decades of fighting and many conversations, SEIU Local 284 members have finally won UI for school workers across Minnesota. When we fight, we win! "
The new rule will start May 28th....look for a lot more info from the union about this amazing new development in the coming days and weeks!
